About the Project:
Code Emphasis is an online web magazine emphasizing the 'left' side of black music simply because we feel that that section of the industry doesn't get as much commercial exposure as some of the mainstream acts.
We are dedicated to bringing you the best in Hip Hop, Neo/Nu/Future Soul, Funk, Jazz, Broken Beat, Experimental, Afro Punk, Spoken Word, Reggae and World Music but essentially we are fans of GOOD music, old and new. Our aim is to 'de-urbanize' black music, rejuvenate it's class and demonstrate the impact it has on wider society such as culture, politics, art, religion and fashion in a multidimensional way.
Every month we will be bringing you exclusive interviews and features, fantastic articles whilst we celebrate the vinyl generation and put the spot light on the freshest acts on the scene.
What does Code Emphasis mean?
Code-emphasis is a learning approach used for reading and language development. It is a phonics-based method by which we emphasize letter-sound correspondences and decode the word. The consistency between letters and their sound values enables the student to read many different words by blending the sounds for each new word. (See Chall 1967)
Why Code Emphasis?
Because we believe in the power of music and the power of words, and that we ought to be selective about the sounds we listen to and the words we read as it is all being decoded and learned. Hence why CE are going to emphasize what we believe to be the positive and inspirational sounds and words for you to decode and benefit from.
Team Emphasis
Meet the family. Despite the quirks, our team has years of experience in their chosen field and a genuine passion for the arts and black culture which is what makes Code Emphasis stand out from the rest. Their expertise needs no introduction as we hope the site speaks for itself.
Editor and Founder :
Charlene Carter
Charlene also known as ‘Cece’ and likes to be called ‘Boss Lady’, works really well as part of a team; she gets on with all the voices in her head. She is most comfortable wearing a granny nightie and a head scarf whilst reading conspiracy theory articles. She loves 90s slow jams and 80s pop but has an aversion to anything with auto-tune. Never shying away from confrontation, she laughs in the face of controversy but deep down Charlene is a soft touch and easily charmed with a pack of Haribo.
Art Director
Bunny Bread
Bunny is 1 half of Airheads Designs and 1 seventh of Uprock Recordings, Maybe one day he’ll make
it to be a whole person.
He has a slight wax problem, not the type that needs syringing, the type that you scratch but once he stops inhaling fumes from spray paint he might just get a handle on things.
Technical Director :
Daire McCann
With ten years experience in the digital space designing sites and other web media, Daire
is known to be a recreational jazz user with a spiralling habit.
Assistant Editor/Columist :
Ama Oliver
Ama has delusions of grandeur and in between writing her column she often writes love notes to herself. Being a dedicated member of the team, Ama likes to schmooze with industry folk and hob knob with the stars to ensure we’re one of the first to get the goodness so we can give back to you.
However, she tends to get a little carried away sometimes, the legal term is ‘Stalking’ and as a consequence she has several restraining orders. On the other hand, the good news is she hasn’t been deported yet and is still on the look out for a British husband.
Head Journalist :
Clarity Jane
Then there’s me. I’m the normal one. Often misunderstood but never mistaken for mental.
I’m the glue that keeps it all together and I happily throw myself into work, often sweeping up the mess the others have made but love it and love them. They don’t know this but one day all this will be mine - Wahhahahhaha (Evil Laugh).
